That was painful. Hopefully it's a learning experience that will motivate them next game and they won't have so many turnovers trying to close it out.

The 3rd period was one of the worst periods I have seen a Generals team play in a long time. And we have had a lot of bad periods.
There were veteran forwards who looked like they were out pleasure skating in the 3rd. No backcheck, no hustle... Pathetic.....

I haven't seen the game but based on the posts about how the momentum changed and they had a meltdown in the 3rd, can anyone summarize what Dips did to try and turn it around. Timeouts, Adjustments, ??

Gens @ Barrie Oct 8th

Post by Popbottle on Fri Oct 09, 2009 6:29 am

I went to the game last evening and continue to be disappointed as we get so close and then end up with a loss. I have done some research to try and understand the problem/s.
I note in checking all of the games this year, that the defensemen that have been on for goals against us are as follows:
Hope in 2 games -2
Vallentine in 7 games -16
Wilson in 5 games -10
McDowell in 3 games -6
DeHart in 7 games -9
Dzelski in 7 games - 11
deHann in 3 games -5
Sullentrop in 5 games -5
Some of the above include power plays for the opposition
I have not included the plus for the Oshawa goals these defensemen were on for as only a few players get on for the powerplay .
My observation on the above is that Vallentine and Dzelski who are expected to be leaders have a the most -'s on the team.
The second observation is that you can't continue to give the majority of the ice time to Vallentine, Dehart, Dzelski, and deHaan and not expect them to be tired by the start of the third period.
I believe we have the talent however; they must be better utilized.

I'm baffled at why some posters in here blame only the defence and the goalkeeper. I felt our backenders were left hung out to dry by the forwards.

This team is sorely missing the veteran leadership and experience we had from players like Nagy and Parnham. These guys are gone and can't be replaced so perhaps some moves need to be made. Problem is no team will touch or show interest in Parnham with his injury and the uncertainty it holds. Brown, Valentine and especially hayes, as the captain needs to step it up. If not on the ice then in the dressing room to reel these kids in. Young team and a huge learning curve equals a long season...or 2 seasons if this is the leadership they have to follow.

Gens @ Barrie Oct 8th

Post by Popbottle on Fri Oct 09, 2009 11:25 am

Thanks for the comments following my post.
I am not trying to center out the defense only it is that I believe a good team starts from the Goaltender out to the Defense and then to the forwards.
So I though Baillie was making a good effort, albeit with the apparent soft ones getting by him, but in some instances with the defense problems and as I though too much ice time for too few players were not helping to get him the best help he could get from the defense.
Someone mentioned to me that Coach Spott of the Rangers tried the same thing last year early in the season by using mainly four defencemen and it did not work out, so he went to using the six defensemen, kept their defence partners together and their was improvement over just using the four only.
I have not focused on the forwards that much but for sure Hayes, in my view is a great example with his efforts on the ice.
A few of the other forwards are not passing as much as they could be especially in the offensive zone and are trying to do it all themselves.
As I previously said I believe we have the talent, but need to get it structured with good implementation and follow up with the whole team.
