OHL Mock Draft 2014 Empty OHL Mock Draft 2014

Post by Macker88 Wed Mar 19, 2014 3:14 am

With the OHL Regular season coming to an end I'd figure I'd give the viewers of this site a first hand look at the 2014 OHL draft. I do some Minor Midget AAA scouting on the side, and I was able to see 90% of the players I'll mention in this Mock Draft more then once. I've also seen video and taken scouting reports on these players into account. Without sounding to over confident, my predictions should be fairly accurate. Although it is hard to guess what some of the top rated American Players are going to do as far as going to School or the OHL. Currently the top rated American Prospects are LW - Max Jones (Detroit Honeybaked), C - Logan Brown (Indiana Ice), C - Nick Pastujov (Detroit Honeybaked), C - Clayton Keller (Shattuck St.Mary's). Keller is Currently the only confirmed NCAA Commit as he is committed to Boston University. The others have been offered spots on the US National Developmental Team. Max Jones is likely to come to the OHL as his brother currently plays for the Plymouth Whalers. Max may pull a I'm going the college route so he slips to Plymouth who is drafting at #7. Although Max is a top 4-5 talent. Logan Brown's dad is Jeff Brown and he is a former Ottawa 67 so it has been said he is likely coming to the OHL. Brown is also considered a top 10 pick, but with Ottawa drafting #3 don't expect him to head to Ottawa. As for Pastujov, he has played with the Detroit Honeybaked program for the last few seasons, an he may give some thought to the OHL if he goes to an American team, however he looks destined to go the NCAA route along with Keller. An now.. the mock draft.

1. Sarnia Sting - Jakob Chychrun - D (Toronto Jr.Canadiens)
Chychrun is the overwhelming favorite to go number 1 this year. He is by far the most talented and OHL ready player available in the draft. He suited up with Team Ontario at the Under 17 Championship this past Christmas and was arguably the teams best defender. He has a rocket of a shot, he's already physically ready to play in the OHL and his skating is among the best available in the draft. There is a thought that Chychrun may not report to Sarnia, given there ownership situation, and the fact there not exactly a top OHL organization. Also Sarnia may want a player who will play for them for more then 2 years. None the less picking Chychrun is the best move for the Sting. If he plays for them he helps, if they trade him they would acquire numerous assets that help.

2. Kitchener Rangers - Adam Mascherin - C/LW (Vaughan Kings)
Mascherin is the most pure goal scorer available in the draft. He's a smaller but stocky forward who buzzes around the net at all times. He reminds me a lot of Phil Kessel, expect he's more physical & aggressive and doesn't have as much high end speed. He's not exactly the most defensively responsible player but he does position himself well in the defensive zone. In picking Mascherin your getting a guy who is physically ready to step into the OHL and produce at a high level. Sure they're are things you can knit pick about Mascherin's game but his total package is among the best in his age group. If the Rangers pass on him I can't seeing him slip past #4.

3. Ottawa 67's - Mike McLeod - C (Toronto Marlboros)
The Ottawa 67's are set on defense going into next season, so it only makes sense for them to take another highly skilled offensive weapon. An Mike McLeod is just that. McLeod, one of the fastest skaters if not the fastest skater in the GTHL, possesses high end skill to go along with his high end speed. He seems to be more of a playmaker then a scorer but he can do both well. It's very noticeable that he thinks the game well and has a high hockey IQ. His speed was sometimes a deterrent in minor midget as he was often to far a head of the play, but it should level out at the OHL level. McLeod isn't overly physical but he doesn't mind going to the dirty areas or throwing a hit. With Konecny and McLeod 1-2 down the middle the 67's should be in good shape going forward.

4. Belleville Bulls - Tye Felhaber - C (Ottawa Valley Titans)
Felhaber was always considered a 1st round talent, by the mid point of the Minor Midget season he was being considered a top 10 talent, after a strong showing at the OHL Cup in my opinion he has moved into a top 5 pick. Logan Brown, Max Jones, Nick Pastujov and Clayton Keller are probably better picks, but given the fact there are questions about their commitment to the OHL mixed with the fact the Bulls haven't had an American on there roster since Alex Aleardi a few years back, it makes sense for the Bulls to go with the highly offensive Felhaber. Now I only saw him play twice, but you can tell his hockey IQ is way above average already, he seems to control the play whenever he is on the ice and is great at finding the soft spots in the offensive zone when he is without the puck. This type of high end offensive ability is something the Bulls would surely love to add to their forward core. It wouldn't shock me to see Brandon Saigeon go at number either.

5. Mississauga Steelheads - Max Jones - LW (Detroit Honeybaked U-18)
Jones is the most likely of all the top American prospects to head to the OHL. With the Steelheads drafting Jones former teammate Sean Day last season, mixed with their need for a high end scoring forward it makes loads of sense to have Max Jones slotted into the number 5 pick. Scouts say Jones is the total package, I have only seen video of this kid, but he seems to have above average speed, a cannon of a shot and outstanding puck skills. The Steelheads would be lucky to have him at #5. If their are questions about him wanting to play in Plymouth look for the Steelheads to go with Brandon Saigeon as he possesses similar skills.

6. Niagara Icedogs - Brandon Saigeon - C/LW (Hamilton Jr.Bulldogs)
Saigeon was considered a top 3 pick before the season began as he played Minor Midget during his Bantam season an did not look out of place. Him slipping to 6th is more to do with the teams drafting in front of Niagara's needs coupled with other players out preforming him this season. Saiegon is a 6'1 201lbs center who tore up the OMHA this season. He had 57 points in just 40 regular season games & had a strong showing at the OHL Cup tying for 4th in points despite only playing 4 games compared to the top scorers 6 & 7. Saigeon is a big, strong, power forward with a rocket of a shot and outstanding offensive ability. The Icedogs are set on the back end so adding a player with Saigeon's overall ability to their offense is an outstanding upgrade.

7.Plymouth Whalers - Nick Pastujov - C (Detroit Honeybaked U-16)
Pastujov is another kid I only saw video of, but from what i saw he looks to be one of the most talented 98 born players available. He's strongly considering the NCAA route, but Plymouth does have a track record of selecting US born players and getting them to commit to the OHL, so to me the risk with this pick makes a lot of sense. Pastujov is a highly skilled offensive player who stands 5'11 and weighs 185. He seems to carry a high hockey IQ along with outstanding puckhandling ability as well as a level of patience with the puck. I wish I could of seen more of him, but from what I've heard if there wasn't any question marks surrounding him he would be a sure fire top 5 pick.

8.Owen Sound Attack - Victor Mete - D (Toronto Jr.Canadiens)
Mete, is bar far the best skater available in this draft, while he's not going to wow you with his offensive numbers he is still a point per game player. He could run an OHL power play today if need be. He has an outstanding hockey IQ to go along with his skating ability. He lacks some size and strength but the strength will come and 5'10 isn't completely undersized. Watching this kid play he reminds me a lot of Morgan Reilly. Owen Sound could really use a defense man of Mete's ability. Cole Candella & Logan Stanely are also defensive options at #8.

9. Peterborough Petes - Logan Brown - C (Indiana Ice U-16)
Brown is the son of former NHLer and Ottawa 67, Jeff Brown. So despite being American he seems to be leaning towards the OHL, and at 6'4 201 the Petes would be lucky to have Brown slip to them at number 9. The Petes love to add big strong skilled forwards, and after adding defense man Matt Spencer last year in the 1st round, adding another hulking forward would make sense. Brown is another kid I haven't seen much of other then video, but with that being said he looks to have a lot of promising skills. Among those skills are his rocket of a shot. There is some room to grow for Brown but with his high hockey IQ and solid hockey genes he should reach his potential, and the OHL is the best route for him to do so.

10. Saginaw Spirit - Cole Candella - D (Vaughan Kings)
Candella was a player that saw his stock start high, drop a little and then finish strong. Candella is a 6 foot, 170 pound all around defense man who put up 74 points in 93 total minor midget contests this past season. He also appeared in 3 games with the Milton Icehawks of the OPJAHL. Candella shows a total commitment to the defensive side of the puck while not hindering his offensive ability. He is physical, does not take himself out of the play to make a check and is able to contain players with relative ease. Another strong quality the Candella possesses is his ability to make a strong break out passes and his ability to make the correct play. Candella may not stand out as a rookie but will be a solid OHL player.

11. Sudbury Wolves - Logan Stanley - D (Waterloo Wolves)
The Wolves graduate most of their blue line after this season and return a good chunk of their forward core, so it makes sense they'd look defense with their 1st round pick. Logan Stanley is a big 6'5 201lbs mobile defenseman who had 28 points in 28 games with the Waterloo Wolves Minor Midget squad. He enjoyed a strong playoff run and OHL cup, which saw his stock rise. Stanley definitely has room to grow, but mobile 6'5 defensemen just don't grow on trees. One negative I should mention is he seems to struggle occasionally to make quick decisions with the puck and when he does they sometimes tend to be the wrong ones. These are small things that are correctable none the less.

12. Windsor Spitfires - Anthony Salinitri - C (Windsor Jr. Spitfires)
I'll be honest this is a kid I've never seen play. I'm going on scouting reports and word of mouth here. Salinitri was named Alliance Hockey Player of the year at the recent OHL Cup Banquet. He stands 5'10 and weighs 150. He was just over a point per game player with the Jr Spitfires recording 40 points in 32 games. He's said to have tremendous offensive ability and a high hockey IQ. He's one top prospect who's defensive game is just as defined as his offensive game, which will translate into trust with his OHL team next season. Its known the Spits like to draft local guys, so that coupled with all his high end ability make this a tremendous pick for the Spits. Don't sleep on Cliff Pu, Clayton Keller or Will Bitten being selected in this slot.

13.Barrie Colts - Cliff Pu - C /Wing (Toronto Marlboros)
The Colts will see loads of their offense depart after this season so adding a highly skilled forward like Cliff Pu will definitely be a nice addition. I saw Pu play several times this season and I can honestly say sometimes he blew me away, sometimes he was entirely average. He has a tremendous skating ability, that includes an effortless stride and top end speed. His play making ability is among the best in the age group and he can find the net with relative ease as well. In watchin Pu play he seems to lack high end compete level and hockey IQ, although he to me he projects as a finesse player and he still has room to learn so the knocks on him aren't overwhelming enough to see him slip further in the draft. Pu had 47 points in 33 regular season GTHL games, and added 9 points on 5 goals & 4 assists in the OHL cup. Pu stands 6 foot and weighs 170.

14.North Bay Battalion - Travis Barron - LW (Toronto Jr. Canadiens)
Barron is the prototypical Battalion player, he is responsible defensively and is hard working meat and potatoes type of player. He has elite speed, good hands, high hockey IQ an a ability to get under players skin with his aggressive aggravating play. Barron had 41 points in 30 regular season games with the Jr. Canadiens this season, he also added 7 in 7 games during the OHL cup. Barron also was a call up with the Aurora Tigers, suiting up for 5 games with them adding 1 assist. Barron is one of those guys who doesn't do any one particular thing overly outstanding, but does a number of things well. This will translate into a solid OHL career.

15. Kingston Frontenacs - Sam Dunn - D (Central Ontario Wolves)
Dunn is a player I don't know much about as I saw the Wolves play just once and I was paying attention more to players on the opposing team. I'm hearing he has climbed up the draft boards significantly in the past couple of months, and with the Fronts need to add a high caliber defensmen in this draft it makes sense to me to see them pick Dunn. Dunn stands 6'2 and weighs 194, he had 18 points in 33 regular season games with the Central Ontario Wolves. Dunn has a high compete level an is highly mobile for a kid his size. He has a strong and accurate shot and is very defensively sound, both positionally and the way he thinks the game. It won't be the "sexy" pick, but it will help the Fronts in the future.

16. Oshawa Generals - Taylor Raddysh - LW (Toronto Marlboros)
Raddysh is a player that I saw numerous times, from the start of the season to the playoffs to the OHL Cup. At times he was average, at time he was the best player on the ice. He has a knack for finding the back of the net and racking up points. He had 52 points in 31 regular season games on 25 goals and 27 assists. He led the OHL cup in scoring with 14 points in 7 games, which in large part pushed him into being a late first round pick. With the Generals losing Laughton & Smoskowitz up front and possibly Dal Colle adding another high end scorer to the mix would help the Generals avoid a complete rebuild for another couple of seasons. It wouldn't shock me to see the Generals go with local product Matthew Hotchkiss of the Whitby Wildcats, if they pass on Raddysh.

17. Soo Sault Marie Greyhounds - William Bitten - RW/C (Ottawa Jr. 67's)
The Greyhounds seem to be adding high an offensive players or rock solid defensemen and since there are know rock solid defensemen still available that warrant the 17th overall pick William Bitten makes sense. Bitten is a bit undersized at 5'9, 150lbs which will make some teams shy away. But he has been compared to London Knights super rookie Mitchell Marner, and has posted some outstanding numbers, 78 points in 29 regular season games on 36 goals and 42 assists. He added 10 points in 6 games at the OHL cup, good for 3rd overall. Bitten has high end speed an is overall a fantastic skater, he uses his speed to be very elusive and thus making him very hard to defend. His size leaves some question marks or else he'd be a top 10 pick.

18. London Knights - Clayton Keller - LW/C (Shattuck St.Mary's)
Keller is a top 10 talent, but he is committed to the University of Boston and the USNTDP for next season. However we all know how London has the ability to "Woo" kids away from the NCAA. London will likely have lots of spots up front open for incoming talent so that's likely to be part of their pitch. Keller has excellent hands, great speed and one hell of a shot. He reminds me of Patrick Kane mixed with Max Domi if that makes sense. I've only seen game tape of him, but if the OHL was the only option he'd be in the conversation with Mascherin and McLeod for the top forward available in this draft.

19. Erie Otters - Kyle Maksimovich - LW/C (Toronto Marlboros)
The fact his brother is already an Otter may help sway the Otters in this direction, but Kyle Maksimovich's skill definitely warrants a late 1st round early 2nd round pick. He's on the smaller side at 5'8, 155lbs but this kid is built like a brick house. He has great skating ability, and is very physical for a kid his size. He really enjoys throwing the body around and going to the dirty areas. Look for him to have a growth spurt in the next few years making this a solid late 1st round pick. Maksimovich potted 58 points in 33 regular season games this year, and added another 8 points in 7 OHL Cup games.

20. Guelph Storm - Michael Pezzetta - C (Mississauga Senators)
Pezzetta is a kid I really enjoyed watching. He's a kid I saw numerous times, he definitely grew on me as a player and if I was a GM with an early 1st round pick I'd be dying to snag him early in round 2. But I think Guelph will recognize his potential an snag him up with the last pick of the 1st round. Pezzetta stands 6'1 and weighs 192. He's an emerging power forward who popped 26 points in 29 regular season games and added another 5 points in 5 OHL Cup games. Pezzetta has a high compete level and you can tell he has a great work ethic. For a kid of his size he has outstanding hands, and a lightning quick release. He needs some work, that's no secret but with the way he progressed in just one OHL season, i see him as a risk worth taking with the 20th overall pick.

Names to watch for in the second round.
Matthew Hotchkiss - Whitby Wildcats - Hotchkiss has the ability to take over games at the Minor Midget level, but his compete level is questionable. I saw this kid play 16 teams and I'd say one in every 4 games he really put forth an effort. He's a big kid, with great skating and scoring ability. He's a center but he's terrible in the faceoff dot, so look for him to possibly move to the wing in the O. He definitely has 1st round ability, but the compete level is a huge issue for me as I'm sure it will be with OHL Scouts.

Jonathan Ang - Markham Waxers - Ang played for one of the worst Minor Midget AAA teams in the province this season. But he's produced for the past two seasons at that level, as he played a year up during his bantam season. Ang is a smaller sized player, standing just 5'9 and weighing 130. But his offensive skill is off the charts. He recorded 42 points in 33 regular season games. His effortless skating makes him elusive and this is why he seems to succeed. Its projected that he should continue to rack up the points at the next level. But some question his compete level and desire to win, as he had the opportunity to join better AAA teams for this his draft season.

Nic Sicoly - Toronto Marlboros - Sicoly was rated as a top pick in this years draft after spending last season with the Soo Thunderbirds Minor Midget squad playing a year up. He racked up 88 points in 68 games as an underage player and scouts said he would have been a 1st round pick last year. This season he brought his talents to the GTHL, an either he had trouble adjusting to the game or he was home sick because he just was not consistent. He racked up 33 points in 33 games and 6 points in 7 OHL cup games, but he often looked average on a very good Marlboros team. Sicoly is on the smaller side at 5'7 141, but his tremendous hockey IQ and offensive ability still have him as a top 40 pick.

Jake Harris - Toronto Marlboros,
Kevin Hancock - Toronto Jr. Canadiens
Jonah Gadjovich - Whitby Wildcats
Christopher Paquette - Kingston Frontenacs
Daniil Vertiy - North York Rangers
Mitch Mendonca - Southern Tier Admirals
Keaton Middleton - Huron Perth Lakers

Thanks for taking the time Macker88. Always enjoy your insights and opinions on trades and  drafts. I hope Twohey can swing something with a team like the Petes or a couple of other clubs that have multiple 2nds and thirds for futures.

No problem guys, glad you like it. Hopefully its fairly accurate.

As for the trading of picks, I wouldn't anticipate the Generals acquiring any 2nd round picks in this coming draft. Although acquiring some picks within the top 100 wouldn't be out of the question.

Thanks mygens, I appreciate that. I would agree that Dal Colle in all likely-hood will be back. But I think there is an outside shot he may crack an NHL roster. For that to happen though he needs to add muscle, and he needs to be drafted by the Calgary Flames or go #1 to Buffalo. As I think Florida, Edmonton, NY Islanders, Nashville & Carolina would all send him back.

OHL Mock Draft 2014 Empty Re: OHL Mock Draft 2014

Macker, have you noticed a decline of players coming out of the Oshawa system in the last few years? Back in the late 1990's tons were coming from around here in to the O (Harrison, Eade, Thaylor, Spence, Montgomery, Ward, Rorabeck, Haley...i'm sure there is more i'm forgetting). Now there doesn't seem to that many. I've seen this years group of triple AAA play numerous times and I dont think any of them are ready to make that jump. I dont know if its coaching or perhaps the system Oshawa is using. Thoughts?

OHL Mock Draft 2014 Empty Re: OHL Mock Draft 2014

Post by Macker88 Thu Mar 20, 2014 6:31 pm

There has definitely been a decline in the Oshawa System the last few seasons. But I see the biggest reason for that being, the better players in the Oshawa area, tend to leave the Jr Generals for better teams in their draft years. Lots of guys end up playing in near by Whitby for the Wildcats who are usual a top team in the OMHA. Some guys also head to Clarington, or to the GTHL to get more exposure. Kids don't wanna play for a middle of the pack at best team in their draft year if they no they have a shot at going fairly high in the draft.

Here are few guys drafted out of the Oshawa System the last few years,
Ryan Heeps - Owen Sound Attack - 3rd Round - '13
Shawn Mabley - Oshawa Generals -12th Round - '13
Rory Milne - Sudbury Wolves - 15th Round - '13
Cameron Zannusi - Mississauga - 12th Round - '12
TJ Melancon - Saginaw Spirit - 12th Round - '12
Sean Darroch - Erie Otters - 8th Round - '11
Eric Kimmerly - Erie Otters - 11th Round - '10
Henry Thompson - Ottawa 67's - 12th Round - '10
Nicholas Neal - Sarnia Sting - 15th Round - '10

From Oshawa, But drafted out of other organization
Justen Long - Guelph Storm - 8th Round - '13
Tyler Park - Niagara IceDogs - 9th Round - '11
Nicholas Clark - Brampton Battalion - 13th Round - '11

In 2009 not one player was drafted who was from Oshawa or the Oshawa Organization. So going back 5 drafts you have a total of 9 players drafted from the Generals Minor organization, Heeps in 3rd round being the highest selected player. An only 2 of the 9 of dressed for an OHL game. If you include the 3 from Oshawa but drafted from other organizations you have 12 total players from Oshawa, yet still only 2 have dressed for an OHL game.

Not since Matt Lahey was drafted 10th overall by the Ottawa 67's in 2004 has someone from the Oshawa Generals Minor Organization been drafted in the 1st round. Its important to add, Lahey was a complete bust in the OHL. He ultimately ended his Junior career with the Bowmanville Eagles of the OPJAHL.

Kody Mussleman was also drafted in 2004 in the 1st round by the Sarnia Sting. Although he was from Whitby he was drafted out of the Oshawa Legionaries Jr.A program.

Since the 1999 OHL draft (the Spezza draft) the most successful player drafted out of the Oshawa Minor Hockey System, was former General Adam Berti. Who was selected 6th overall by the Generals in 2002. Berti went out to be drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 3rd round, 68th overall in 2004. Berti played in 2 NHL games, recording 0 points. He spent the majority of his pro career split between the AHL & ECHL before retiring in 2009-2010, at just 24 years of age.

Post by Gens Camper Fri Mar 21, 2014 1:54 pm

It is always interesting to see the mock drafts - whether it be the OHL board or the other boards every year the GENS go in another direction and hit a home run - the last time we went the way everyone had predicted was J T and Del Zotto

I am confident our scouts will find another top forward - I always feel a top forward in the first round is a must

As far as Oshawa producing top OHL players - it's been awhile - Whitby has most of the top Durham Region talent and lately Clarington

Not sure why BUT Oshawa minor system has been poor - To play in Whitby you must live their

While I'm no fan of David Branch, and he does seem to use his job with the OHL & CHL as an advantage while coaching Minor Midget, Whitby is not the only team taking players from other OMHA teams. All it takes for a player to jump to another team is a release. I can't blame kids for jumping to Whitby in their draft year, as Whitby was a top 10 minor midget team all season. Playing on a top team opposed to a bottom feeder, definitely helps a players draft stock.

Just last season the Oakville Rangers (top OMHA team) had numerous players come to them from outside Oakville for their draft year. OHL Cup MVP Adam Craievich left the Lambton Jr Sting to join Oakville. Kyle Capobianco left the Toronto Marlboros organization. Troy Henley left Team Comcast ( a US team). Brendan McGlynn left the Mississauga Senators program. Brett MacKenzie left the Eastern Ontario Wild Program.

As you'll notice minor organizations are becoming power houses to, and recruiting players for their minor midget season from all over Ontario and even Quebec as well as the USA and Russia. The whole landscape of minor midget aaa hockey is changing, its not what it was 10 years ago.
