Notice he isn't being played much, if at all! Some think he might be traded. Is the club disappointed in him? Any thoughts?

I was actually going to make a post about this. We've all got to remember that he's a late 1st round pick. IF Oshawa was going to move anyone for an impact player THIS year it's going to be Cliff. If I'm the GM of Oshawa I trade Cliff and some picks for a player to ideally help them get over the top this year. Next year HOPEFULLY Dal Colle is back and you move him to re-plentish the cupboard with picks and players. Oshawa is in a fantastic position and they can't afford NOT to make a big move this year. As a long time season ticket holder I want to see them make that big move this year. I'm fully aware that next year would be a major rebuild and I'm ready for it. This year however may be a golden opportunity for something special.

Cliff was not playing due to an injury and is just getting into game form. He's spending his time with 3rd and 4th line minutes. I thought he looked better in sunday's game. Give him time and he will come around.

no way you trade away cliff Pu , he's big and a great skater , going to be a really good one i think and he's very young , rebuild next year and after includes him .

we need an overage or vet D man at the trade deadline if not sooner , don't pay that much for one .

gens are solid up front , no worries there , but in the playoffs , you can't have too much D , a veteran with size is what we need ( chapmen ?)

People are always reluctant to trade away their most recent 1st round pick which is completely understandable. But the next question is... IF you knew that winning a Memorial Cup meant you had to trade Cliff Pu.. would you??? I'm guessing that everyone on this board would answer yes.

Cole Cassels had 11 points his first year,,, Hunter Smith had 1. Junior Hockey, although a very high level, still relies heavily on development... My bet is the team knew what they were doing when they drafted this young man..

If you want a top player this year, your trading Cliff Pu or Sam Harding, its one or the other. Harding while not producing offensively is a very key contributor to this Generals squad. If anyone is moved its likely Pu.

In scouting Cliff last season, anyone can see he's a phenomenal skater, great speed, great stride, excellent edge work, stops and starts are elite.. everything about his skating is elite. He has playmaking skill, and good offensive instincts. However I often questioned his compete level, he's a soft player, who doesn't like the physical game, he shy's away when things get rough. His decision making was questionable, which led me to believe his hockey IQ wasn't very advanced. I'm not saying he cant develop, however if he doesn't find a higher compete level, the OHL will eat him up, his overall skill allowed him to thrive in minor midget. Sometime skill doesn't do much for you once you reach the OHL. Work ethic and compete level are huge.

Again, he did miss the start of the season, its hard enough to adjust to the OHL as a 16 year old at the start of the year when everyone is still getting back into things. Its even harder to adjust to the OHL when guys have 20 games under their belts and are thriving.

Great insight on Pu Macker - if what u say is TRUE - why would another team want him and we made a bad pick that could cost us

One BIG fish was moved today - I can only assume we did not have a fit

Baptiste is now in Erie - Most think we need another defenseman but from where

I would part with Harding before Pu , just my gut feeling , Harding in my view is underachieving again , good start last year , faded , this year , more of the same , talk about lacking compete level , thats Harding until he proves me wrong .

Harding has been here awhile now , not impressed , Pu has a huge upside , and when he beefs up will compete more

guarantee you they won't trade Cliff Pu !!!!!!

we can trade some picks for a vet D man , along with Templeton , or hertsburg , or someone else with the farm , not a first round pick , no way , if we get an overage D man with size and shut down smarts , thats all we need

Gens Camper,
- Jeff Corbett from Sudbury would be a reasonably priced, good, physical defender, that skates well, makes a good first pass and can have some mediocre offensive upside. A huge upgrade over Hertzberg or Templeton.

-Sean Callaghan and Jacob Ringuette are options from Saginaw. All three of those guys are OA's.

-Nick Zottl is on the trading block in Mississauga, big, physical guy. Skates fairly well for a big man, not the best hands, but makes smart simple plays. Really like him, but he has a tendency to be inconsistent, although I believe that may have something to with him being unhappy in Mississauga.

- Conor Boland, Dominik Masin or Steven Varga, yes they are all Peterborough Petes, but with the Petes falling quickly in the standings, if the Generals can offer a reasonable deal, it could happen. Boland is an OA, Masin will be in the AHL next year as he was drafted out of Europe by the Lightning and is eligible.

-Zac Leslie and Ben Harpur My gut and well sources are telling me Guelph is likely to sell if they can't add before the world juniors. Their fear is with Walker gone coaching Canada, losing Suter and Baltisberger to the Swiss team and Harpur, Fabbri an Dickinson all candidates for the Canadian team they could lose a significant amount of games while those 5 key guys are out and fall out of the race. Harpur and Leslie would require large returns.

Mitch Jones & Gianluca Curcuruto Jones is a physical in your face defender, who would be an ideal bottom pairing guy. Curcuruto brings solid two way play, he's my idea target.

Josh Chapman Sarnia is looking to add, but realistically they may be open to moving Chapman to a contender. He's been unhappy their since being passed over for the captaincy.

Cliff Pu 's Future In The 'Shwa? Empty Re: Cliff Pu 's Future In The 'Shwa?

Post by Macker88 Tue Nov 25, 2014 1:05 am

Harding is playing in a 3rd line role, because well he's effective there and the Gens don't need his offense right now, he's going to be much more effective in the top 6 next year then Pu. Pu is more sought after then Harding, will bring the bigger return simply because of his label of a 1st round pick.

Harding has a much better compete level then Pu, I've seen both kids play since Bantam and Harding shows much more compete level, aggressiveness, he's a more complete player, thinks the game better, has just as much offensive ability. But he can play in either a checking or offensive role. Pu can't. Harding is more versatile. Pu, it doesn't matter if he beefs up, he's not a physical player, he shy's away from the corners and he is invisible when games get rough. The skating is the only thing Pu has on Harding, an Harding is no slouch in that department.

Hertzberg has little value on the market, look for Templeton, Robertson, Manchurek, Turner, Pu and picks being in play for the Generals. Wouldn't count out Huether although I know the Gens want to keep him.

Ideally Id like to see us snag Moutrey and one of Callaghan or Ringuette as a package from Saginaw or Pancel, Corbett and Tanguay from Sudbury for a package.

I'm not doubting the kid will be fine as I'm sure he'll be an effective OHL player once he develops. The fact of the matter is THIS YEAR he's the biggest asset that the Gens have to trade. If Cliff isn't traded for a top level player I'll be a little surprised to tell you the truth. I'm hoping the Gens make a push for Bertuzzi from Guelph. His playoff experience and offensive upside is what the Gens should be looking for on the forward side. Fun times ahead!

So I guess with this logic Colorado was crazy trading for Ray Bourque. He never won before does that make him a loser? Just because you are on a losing team does not make you a loser sorry totally disagree with this. If you have a shot and a player strengthens that shot go for it!

Mygens, are you actually serious with that comment ? why would you want three guys from a losing team?

Well first of all, if your a winning team your not trading away your top players, because well your a winning team and going to be competing in the playoffs. Second of all, why do NHL teams raid non playoff team's rosters every trade deadline, well the short answer is because even the Buffalo Sabres the worst team in Hockey have good players. Your telling me an NHL team acquiring Tyler Myers or Drew Stafford or Tyler Ennis would be acquiring a terrible player ? I guess Erie getting Nick Baptiste was a bad move then by your theory. Give your head a shake

OK, back to the Pu question. He is not a key player this year. So to deal him for a quality D man to help the team over the top would be a fair price to pay.

I like Pu and see his worth. However, FWIW compete level comes from within. Not sure how much his compete will improve as he grows and develops.

MY head is shaking , but i still wouldn't want 3 players coming as a group from a losing team . just my opinion , don't get excited Macker .

and regarding Pu or harding , i think it will become a moot point if Cassels is suspended for a lengthy term , which with Branch he could very well be , in that case the team will need Harding .

I don't know i just see a lot of up side with Pu , whereas Harding has not impressed me at all , sorry

Not many 1st rounders become key players initially....but eventually most do... The kid has played a handful of games, with not many minutes of icetime, but many seem to think they know more than the gens scouting staff ... I bet they might have watched this kid play a bit more...

Why wouldn't you want 3 quality OHL players simply because there team isn't good. By your theory if I'm the Anaheim Ducks, I don't want Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall and Justin Schultz because they come the Oilers who are terrible? It just doesn't make any sense. Guys that come from losing teams almost always come to their new team with an even added chip on their shoulders, and are very appreciative of the opportunity to play for a winner. On top of that if your a GM, you do your homework on a players attitude. Which the Generals have done, the main reason they stayed away from Josh Ho-Sang. Jeff Corbett, Nathan Pancel and Baptiste all play for the worst team in the OHL an all are highly sought after players, with great attitudes and will's to win. They would make any OHL team better.

The upside is seen in Pu because his best attributes are his speed and hands, the two most obvious things you see in watching a hockey game. I'm not saying Pu won't work out, but I am saying he's a soft player with a very low compete level. His hockey IQ is average at best and is defensive zone coverage and overall decision making is lacking. 4 of those 5 qualities are things you can't teach. Harding is the best player, he's been defensively sound since day one, has a high hockey IQ, great on ice awareness, and all his offensive qualities are there, he's just playing in a defensive role and his skills are more deceptive, because they're not flashy

no disrespect intended , but i would take one guy from a particular losing team but not a group , bad habits may come over with them , throw a wrench in the dressing room

last thing you want is to disrupt the chemistry /balance on a winning team , bringing in 3 Petes could wreck it , trust me it will never happen !!

the only Pete that would interest me would be Richie or Boland , we need Defence more than anything

we will not win the memorial cup with only 4 to 5 good defenseman , can't happen , as soon as an injury occurs and we have to rely on hertz burg , templeton , or robertson , we are in trouble .

need 5 to 6 solid guys on D , I've been to enough Memorial cups to see that .

having bantered back and forth isn't this a great position for us to be in ! its been a very long time , since I've seen this good a team here !

just hope Cassels isn't gone too many games and that Harding can fill the big shoes .

we can't get ahead of ourselves , Erie , SSM , and NB , are going to be tough .

hopefully we can add pieces that will keep us on top , sure would love to go to Quebec in the spring
