John Tavares close to becoming all-time OHL top goal scorer
As of February 20th, JT has 204 career goals in the OHL, with 9 regular season games left to play this season to catch the all-time leader Peter Lee with 215 goals. I assume JT won't be back in the league next year. Here's wishing him good luck getting 12 goals in 9 games =D

Actually he got his 214 career goal at 12:58 of the third period, which broke the old record of 213.

Re: John Tavares close to becoming all-time OHL top goal scorer
John Tavares potted a hat trick Sunday to become the OHL's all-time leading goal scorer.
Tavares, who's expected to be the top pick in this year's NHL draft, capped his big day by netting the go-ahead goal with less than two minutes left to give the visiting London Knights a 4-3 win over the league-leading Windsor Spitfires.
The hat trick brings Tavares's career OHL total to 215 goals - two more than Peter Lee scored in five seasons with the Ottawa 67's in the 1970s.
Tavares, 18, is in his fourth OHL campaign. He played his first three seasons and the beginning of this one with the Oshawa Generals before being traded to London.
Since moving into second place on the all-time list with a two-goal performance in Kitchener, Ont., on Feb. 15, Tavares has been on a tear, scoring 15 goals in 10 games.
The native of Oakville, Ont., leads the OHL in both goals (58) and points (104) in 55 games this season, despite missing a handful of games to play for Canada at the world junior championship in Ottawa, where he was named tournament MVP after leading Canada to the gold medal.
His OHL career highs are 72 goals and 134 points, both set in 2006-07 with Oshawa.
London (47-16-1-2) beat Windsor (56-8-0-1) for the first time in six meetings this season, and now trails the Spitfires by 16 points for top spot in the OHL's Western Conference.
Tavares opened the scoring 4:51 into the first, tying Lee's record.
"When I scored so early in the game, I figured there would be more opportunities to help my team out," Tavares said. "But the boys really came in here focused today - we wanted to win this game before heading into the playoffs and moving forward."
He broke the record with seven minutes left in the game and received a prolonged standing ovation from the sold-out Windsor crowd.
"I really appreciated the reaction of the fans," he said. "They have great fans here and it was a classy thing to do."
With less than two minutes remaining to play, Tavares completed the hat trick to snap a 3-3 tie and propel London to the win.

Re: John Tavares close to becoming all-time OHL top goal scorer
I have one beef with the way this was announced last night. With about 8 minutes left of a 2-2 hockey game, that our players are looking to win...a must win night....we change the atmosphere by announcing Tavares is the all time leading scorer . The game was in the afternoon. Couldn't the announcement have been made after the national anthem? I kind of felt it was a bit disrespectful to the Petes and the Gens who were playing there butt off, to be trumped by Tavares.
I love Tavares...and I am so happy to see him continue to be succesful...and really, really glad he beat the record. Just thought the timing of annoucing it was odd.

The timing was there because that's when the out of town scores show up on the video board.

I agree ceremonies/announcements should be made before or after the game... possibly between periods
but in this case before the game would have worked

Yes but then you are also taking the spotlight away from the billets. There already was a pre-game ceremony and that was their moment. There's a positive and negative to the timing of anything.

Re: John Tavares close to becoming all-time OHL top goal scorer
Apparently JT might not have broken the record. There is a possibility that he trails the record by a goal with two games left to play.
This is according to Sportsnet. Apparently a historian has gone through the newspapers and come up with a different total. Apparently there are a few discrepancies.
Anyways to gurantee that JT has the record he needs to goals.
The League apparently has come out and said that JT is now the record holder.
Although with the record now under review, they will need suffiecient evidence in order to over turn it.

Re: John Tavares close to becoming all-time OHL top goal scorer
This is a great accomplishment in the OHL. Although here is an interesting fact. The previous record holder Peter Lee, only went on to play six seasons in the NHL, then 13 seasons in Germany. It shows that setting these marks in the OHL does'nt guarantee stardom in the NHL.
