Possible Trade Scenarios ?
With Training Camps wrapping up in the next week or so and rosters being finalized, it looks like a few teams have had youngsters beat out veterans for roster spots. There are also other scenarios where teams are stocking up for potential playoff and memorial cup runs, as well as scenarios where teams are going young and looking to move key veteran pieces or talented youngsters who show promise. I know I'll catch some flack and some debates will occur, but I'm curious as to what the Generals could possibly do, as well as what people think they could do to make this team better.
With the Generals having a few desirable veterans in Laughton, Altshuler and Sullentrop I'll throw out a few trade scenarios involving these guys.
To London - Laughton & Sullentrop
To Oshawa - Brett Welychka, Jacob Jammes & Mitchell Kreis
Why it works ?
The Knights get arguably one of the best forwards available in the OHL. Laughton can fit any where in their lineup and upgrades them immediately. Sullentrop is great defensively, very physical and a 5th year veteran with lots of playoff experience. The Generals get Welychka who plays a limited role in London, and would greatly benefit from top 6 minutes, which he'd get in Oshawa. He's undrafted (although invited to Tampa Bay Rookie Camp) so he would likely be back for an OA season the following year. Jammes is a guy in an out of the lineup in London, but would be a 3rd line player on most every other OHL team. He may not be a top 6 guy but he'll be around for a few years and is an upgrade over what we have. Kreis was a 3rd round pick of London in 2013 but with London's top 4 eating up so many minutes and them currently being 8 deep at the position its unlikely he'd see minutes til what would be his 3rd OHL season. He'd likely be a 7th D guy in Oshawa in 2013 but would be a nice piece moving forward.
To Windsor - Daniel Altshuller & Scott Laughton
To Oshawa - Adam Bateman, (G) Jordan Dekort, Ryan Foss & Pick(s)
Why it Works ?
The Spitfires are primed to give London a run for their money in the west but are thin up front, more specifically up the middle. They'll start the year with either Ho-Sang or Johnson up the middle on the 2nd line but both are natural wingers, and if they where to acquire Laughton it would allow them to play their natural position as well as strengthen their top 6. Windsor's other weakness is seemingly in net. DeKort is a good young goalie, but young is the key word, most teams don't go through a playoff run with a goalie who's never been a starter. Altshuller would solve that problem as he had a fantastic playoff run last year and the prior year played solid in relief of Ballie. Altshuller is drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes and could possibly challenge for a spot on Canada's world junior squad. The Generals receive a defensemen who was a first round pick in 2011 and has loads of potential. DeKort would come in and split time with Appleby. DeKort was the back up for team Ontario's U-17 team in 2011-2012 so he is a good goalie. An Ryan Foss was Windsors 2nd round pick in 2013 and can play wing or center and is a great offensive player who would help the Generals for years to come.
Smaller trader scenarios -
Guelph - Is also primed for a lengthy playoff run, but there going with an unproven goalie and are thin on the blueline after Finn & Harpur.
Kitchener - Another contender with question marks in goal. Tyson Teichmann is overage but he's never been an outstanding goalie in the OHL.
Erie - is probably another year away, but with Fox, Dansk, Pelech, Burakovsky & Brown likely gone after this season they may load up.
Kingston - Look to be serious contenders in the East, have a solid roster but could use some veteran depth on D and up front.
Barrie - They return a lot from last seasons Eastern Conference Champion team, minus a starting goalie. So Altshuller could be moved there to solve there problem. They also could lack some depth up front if Hall signs with Vancouver and joins their AHL club. Same goes for Theoret who is Winnipeg Jets rookie camp.
Sudbury- With the trade to acquire Crisp and McDowell, the Wolves actually look pretty solid and could make a run in a weaker Eastern Conference. Laughton would be an upgrade over every player on there team, and Sullentrop would add some veteran leadership on a young D-Core. They also have lots of pieces to move so it could be interesting.
Again Im just thinking out loud but Id love to hear some other scenarios.

Re: Possible Trade Scenarios ?
I like both of these deals but I doubt we will see any of the three Gens moved until the deadline. Prices always up the closer you get to Jan 10. Reality is if Scottie is sent back it wont be until after 9 games and then he will be off to WJC in Mid Dec so we may get to see him a in just a handful of games (after he serves the balance of his suspension)....
This team is going to need Altshuller more than ever this year and if he can keep us in a playoff position to Jan 10 thats all we can hope for before he dealt to London, Guelph or Windsor.
Keep those scenarios coming!

If we are in a playoff position come Jan 10, there is no way Altshuller is traded. The management will want the playoff revenue.

Re: Possible Trade Scenarios ?
Not sure why you would want to do this? Welychka has not done anything to make him desirable although he has some top 6 potential. Jammes may not even make London if all their eligible players are returned and Kreis is a midget. I don't think he weighs 140. I find that the Hunters hype their players as do their fans in chat rooms. If I did that deal for Laughton, alone, with Marner instead of Jammes then I might and would probably want a 2nd in the 2024/15 draft. The deal as you present it would be a steal for London. Look at what was paid last January for Quine, Janes etc. Three 2nds for Quine. Laughton is worth that and more. In your second proposal. again, I think you are undervaluing both Altschuller and Laughton. I wouldn't want Bateman as he has not lived up to the hype about him, is injury prone and has not developed to the potential expected two years ago. He is not a top 4 calibre. Dekort, again, cannot make Windsor, also has not developed as expected and is at best a backup. And, I don't know anything about Foss but I don't think he is making Windsor this year. That package from Windsor, if, supplemented with three 2nds, might cut it. Sending those three Gens at the trade deadline should bring the equivalent of 8 2nd rounders and the Gens need it as they have no 2nds for the next two years. I know hometown fans such as myself tend to overvalue our own players but in this case I don't believe I am! Laughton would be an all-star if returned and I think Altschuller will be one of the top goalies in the league this year. We need more than 3rd and 4th liners to replace them. I stand to be corrected. I

Re: Possible Trade Scenarios ?
I agree jayco, We should be talking trade scenarios closer to the deadline as we may need to add not subtract, and if we really aren't going anywhere by the deadline then start trading our assets we will get more value in our asset's closer to the deadline.
This is my opinion.

Re: Possible Trade Scenarios ?
I'm just trying to get some discussion going here, I agree we shouldn't be trading Altshulller or Laughton at this point, as there value only goes up as the season gets deeper an contenders start adding thus making other contenders desperate and they over pay for "rentals". However I do believe all 3 do need to be traded at some point. Even if the generals make the playoffs there not getting past the first round an then would likely lose all 3 of these players to pro hockey.
As for my scenarios, there just options. Kreis is a midget yes but he is the same size as Vande Sompel, not to not pick but he's actually 2 inches taller lol. Welchyka is really under valued because of his role on the Knights. He's far more talented then he gets credit for. James I've only seen a few times, I've liked what I saw an I figured he'd be a throw in almost as he doesn't dress often in London due to there depth. Marner would be more desirable in a trade involving Laughton though I completely agree. As for the Windsor one, believe it or not DeKort is penciled in as their starter. I've only seen him play twice once live an once on TV. He played pretty well when I saw him but I won't defend him to much because I really don't no much. Foss was windsors first pick this season although it was a second round pick as Windsor didn't have a first round pick. Bateman has a lot of upside despite his injury concerns I personally think the kid just needs more ice time an he could really develop. But you guys are right there still should be more of a return for Laughton an Altshuller. I just didn't wanna go overboard in the returns for these players.

Re: Possible Trade Scenarios ?
Nicely justified! Fair enough! Everything you said makes sense. I thought you undervalued our players but I agree with what you said about the London and Windsor players.

Re: Possible Trade Scenarios ?
Why don't you people try and think of line combinations, playing styles, systems, etc. instead of trying to trade the players away BEFORE THE SEASON EVEN STARTS!!!! Players come on here to see what the FANS are saying about them and the team and you guys are trading them before the team is even picked. I understand these topics coming up late November/December time, but before the team is even picked and the season has started?????? I am remembering why I quit posting and why I quit coming to this board.

Re: Possible Trade Scenarios ?
You think players that are drafted and played in the NHL let what's said on a fourm effect them ? Im sure these players are well aware there days as a general are numbered. Personally I have already posted line combinations, and frankly the generals could use a few upgrades. There top 6 is very underwhelming, there bottom 6 is very young and inexperienced. There d-core and goaltending will be there string points. But with that said other then Brown and Sullentrop none of there D are really established OHL players. Adding a few 4th year players could definitely help the young players mature and maybe net the team a few more wins. But either way you can't rebuild and try and win a title it's one or the other and the generals are in rebuild move so these aforementioned players wil be traded at some point we weather it's now in November or at the deadline.
Re: Possible Trade Scenarios ?
Whats the point of talking hockey if we can't express disapointment in a player, or talk about the future.
I understand that as fans there should be some positives, but its not like anyone came in here and trashed these players up and down.
Where do you sit as a season ticket holder Tipcosr? just curious because the talk around the rink is usually 10 times worse (not that, thats right) but just like every other online forum, people will not always agree and some people are gonna say things just to get a rise....

And when we all reach December and I win the Lotto I will be glad to take Scott and Daniel off your hands for the next Memorial cup champion Kingston Frontenacs. Oh, to dream, perhaps Go Gens... Regards the croc.

Re: Possible Trade Scenarios ?
if we are going to trade any of our top guys , we should be looking for 2nd round picks period , never mind bringing in guys that other teams are willing to part with !!!!
you build a winning team by gathering a bunch of 2nd round picks , to use and develop within our own system .
just my view !

Re: Possible Trade Scenarios ?
I agree 2nd round picks would be key to a rebuild, I feel any picks in the top 100 are good picks, as long as management uses them appropriately, but I'd definitely look to acquire 2nd's and 3rd's first and foremost. With that being said, acquiring young an talented players born in 95, 96 and 97 is also not a bad way to go. Look what Niagara did they traded some top guys to Barrie and got picks and Ryan Strome when he was a 16 year old, an in one years time he was a top 10 NHL pick and a key player in their franchise for a couple years after.
