Import Question -
So Mikhail Grigorenko was recently sent back to junior with the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL, a few things confused me here. They already have Fabrice Herzog who is a Toronto Maple Leafs Prospect and was part of Switzerland at the WJC. They also have Nick Sorenson who is a 2nd round pick of the Anaheim Ducks and was part of the Swedish World Junior team. That if I'm not mistaken equals 3 Imports. Not only do they have 3 on the roster, but also all 3 played vs Rouyn-Noranda this past Saturday, and they all had points.
How can a CHL team play with 3 imports is my first question ?
Second question is, Can teams pick up free agent imports still or does the trade deadline also signify a roster freeze ?
I ask the second question because we just released Kuronen to the USHL, so could we technically pick up Artur Gavrus if he decided he wanted to come back to the OHL. Aka we was "re-assigned".
I compare this Grigorenko situation to one that could occur with the Generals, what if the Marlies decided today Biggs wasn't playing enough and they wanted to send him back to Junior. We would then have to many OA's and the deadline has past.
I'm just completely confused how this works, I know the Q has the same import rules as the WHL and O

Re: Import Question -
If Biggs was cut from the Marlies he could not sign with an OHL team as the roster deadline has passed and he is not part of any OHL team.
The Generals had to get down to 3 OA's meaning we cut Hughes, Biggs, Lessio and Jenner.
The only reason I can think of that an Import would be allowed to join a team (or any player for that matter) is that they had signed a card for the season. I could see teams taking a chance and doing this at the deadline, If you have a card left and have someone that could be reassigned then why not.
CHL teams can protect 3 import players, I don't know the whole process, I know it was introduced to protect teams from cutting an Import who is NHL drafted and then them being returned to the CHL and another team picking them up. In the OHL (not sure about the WHL and Q) you can only have two imports on the active roster, meaning if a third import is sent back you hae to cut one.

Re: Import Question -
Speaking of Hughes, does anyone know where he ended up, ...and why did Jimi Kuronen leave? Not seeing enough ice?

Re: Import Question -
I don't know where the article is but apparently there is a CHL rule that if an import is sent back after playing in the NHL at a certain point the CHL team can carry 3. This happened with Grigorenko the first time and Patrick Roy was pissed when he found out he did not have to release an import as per said rule......if I can find the article I will post it....if anyone finds it feel free to put it up. Just pointing out that there's no foul play going on here.

StingRay5, I knew where Kuronen went; was just wondering why he might have left.

Re: Import Question -
jayco, its all good. just jumping to be helpful.
The article I found commented about Jimi and fellow Finn and Buccaneer Jarkko Parikka sharing the same advisor. Looks like he left as he was only going to get the 7th if 8th d treatment here and looks to be getting top 4 d minutes in Des Moines. They are pretty excited about his arrival from what I can read on line.

Re: Import Question -
StingRay5...thanks for the info. That's what I was assuming that it was lack of ice time. He had a similar skillset to others eg. Vande Sompel and Carlsle, and lacked size. Geez I would like to see the Gennies get two very good Euros next year. We have had too many mediocre manys in recent years. Don't think we will ever see Blueger!

Re: Import Question -
I wasn't a huge fan of Kuronen but at the beginning of the season he looked like he had a step on Desrocher & Vande Sompel, but as the season went on Vande Sompel got a lot better and passed him on the depth chart, and then when injuries occurred Desrocher got into the lineup and out played him.
Not knocking Twohey at all here, but I'm curious as to if he knew this was unfolding, as he could of possibly brought in another import of some sort.
As for Blugers, will never see him. He's a 94 so he'd be an OA Import next season. Pittsburgh prefers him in the NCAA as he has more time to develop and their in no rush for his services. On top of that he's getting top 6 minutes and producing at a decent clip. In most cases we see kids jump the NCAA due to ice time, well lack of ice time or because NHL clubs who drafted them want them to play major junior, because it closer mimics and NHL schedule.
