OHL Draft May 7th Gen's draft 16th
Found this on TheScout.ca
With the Ontario Hockey League Draft three weeks away, TheScout.ca offers a look at some of the players who are expected to be taken in the first round with our 2011 OHL Mock Draft.
1.Barrie Colts - Aaron Ekbald
Team - Sun County Panthers (MHAO)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 6'3"
WT - 200
Unless you have been living under a rock, you are already aware that Aaron Ekblad has been granted Exceptional Status for the 2011 OHL Draft. Moving forward, Ekblad is the selection that makes the most sense for the Colts. Although there is some debate as to who may be the best player in the OHL, there is no doubt who the top defenceman for the draft is, and with that, the Colts’ selection of Ekblad is somewhat easy. Despite his exceptional status, expectations should be somewhat lowered on Ekblad. He will not come in and be the next John Tavares, however he will come in and play a very strong two way game, develop his offensive skills and grow into one of the top defenceman in the OHL, in a few years.
2. Peterborough Petes - Nicholas Ritchie
Team - Toronto Marlboros (GTHL)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'2"
WT - 200
Before the exceptional status of Ekblad, Ritchie was no doubt the top player available in this draft. With the development of Slater Koekkoek and with Connor Boland and a high import pick expected to help the defence, the easy selection will be Ritchie. He will be able to come in and play a top 9 role initially with the Petes, and move his way onto lines with two of Quine, Watson, Puempel and Martschini by seasons end.
3. Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds - Nicholas Baptiste
Team - Ottawa Senators (OEMHL)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'0"
WT - 170
Baptiste will be a bit of a wild card. Before his recent injury, there was no doubt that he was one of the top 5 players for this years draft, however there may be some concern with his heath after a serious shoulder injury. Expectations are that he will be ready to go for the start of the season, if not a month in. As a player, there is no doubting his skill level. He has played most of the season on the wing and would be a perfect fit with a Nick Cousins, offering the Greyhounds immediate secondary scoring.
4. Sarnia Sting - Darnell Nurse
Team - Don Mills Flyers (GTHL)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 6'3"
WT - 175
Sarnia is in despite need of help on the back end. After Joe Rogalski and Nathan Charlitti, it would appear that there are some significant issues with depth. Nurse will be able to come in and play in the bottom 3, kill penalties and develop his skill set. Like Ekblad, he will not be a player that comes in and makes an immediate impact, but has all the tools that you look for in a franchise defenceman. Very comparable to Erik Gudbranson.
5. Belleville Bulls - Jordan Subban
Team - Toronto Marlboros (GTHL)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 5'10"
WT - 165
Subban will continue the long line of success for the Subban family in Belleville. He is a smaller puck moving defenceman, that will come in right away and play on the second power play unit and add an offensive spark to the Bulls back end. With his skill set and family pedigree, there is a chance that he becomes the 'Ryan Murphy' of this draft, and becomes an elite offensive defenceman in the OHL.
6. Sudbury Wolves - Jordan Maletta
Team - St. Catharines Falcons (OMHA)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'2"
WT - 200
Maletta is a forward who has the tools to be the best player in the age group, however something has been missing this season. His play at the Canada Winter Games and at times throughout this season show that he can be an elite player at the OHL level, however there are other times when his play is somewhat uninspiring. Based on coach Trent Cull's history of success with some of the younger Wolves, as well as in Syracuse with the Crunch, Maletta may be best served with Sudbury. He can play all three forward positions, and would be slotted in among Sudbury’s bottom 6 forwards to start the season. If he puts it together, he could be a steal at #6.
7. Brampton Battalion - Bryson Cianfrone
Team - Toronto Marlboros (GTHL)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 5'9"
WT - 155
Cianfrone is one of, if not the smartest players in the draft. He plays strong at both ends of the ice, and displays a high-end skill set. Given Brampton's success last season with a young blue-line, and its lack of dynamic young forwards, Cianfrone is a forward that makes a lot of sense for the Battalion. Max Domi could also be worth a gamble at this spot.
8. Kingston Frontenacs - Ryan Kujawinski
Team - Sudbury Wolves (NOHA)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'1"
WT - 185
Kujawinski came into the season as a bit of a wild card. He was an unknown forward from Iroquois Falls in his first year of ‘AAA’, who displayed a strong skill set in the opening September tournament in Toronto. Since then, his rise and development has been phenomenal, and is one of the most improved players in Ontario. He is a forward who is not a natural finisher, but has a strong work ethic and always seems to be in the middle of things offensively. The question is; how good will he get?
9. London Knights - Max Domi
Team - Don Mills Flyers (GTHL)
Position - Forward
HT - 5'9"
WT - 160
Two months ago it was announced that Max Domi would be looking to forgo the Ontario Hockey League to peruse an education in the NCAA via the USHL. As of April 17th, nothing has changed. Despite there being no reports of his interest in the OHL, it makes sense for a team in the top 10 to take the risk of drafting his rights. London makes sense given their high level of success with recruiting these kinds of players. Domi is without a doubt the most skilled forward in the Draft. Despite his 5'9 frame, he is one of the hardest players to knock of the puck, and always seems to bring a high compete level. Domi will go in the top 10; it is just a matter of what team will be willing to take the risk.
10. Guelph Storm - Bo Horvat
Team - Elgin Middlesex Chiefs (MHAO)
Position - Forward
HT - 5'9"
WT - 175
Horvat may be the most OHL ready forward available in the Draft, and that skill set and intelligence will be needed in Guelph; who will see a significant amount of forwards move on next year. Horvat is a centre that does everything well. He is strong with the puck, sees the ice well, is a smart two-way player, and has good footwork and above average skating ability. He has the ability to come into the OHL and play a top 6 offensive role right away, which is something that will be needed in Guelph.
11. Plymouth Whalers - Brandon Robinson
Team - Toronto Jr. Canadiens (GTHL)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'3"
WT - 185
Robinson is another high-risk high reward forward. Given his mix of size and skill, it’s hard to ignore the potential that he brings to the table. He has all the skills to be a top forward at the next level, he just needs to bring his compete level and focus more consistently. With only three graduating players, Plymouth has the ability to swing for the fences so to speak, one could see an Anthony DeAngelo, Steve Santini or Will Butcher taken here.
12. Erie Otters -Steven Varga
Team - York Simcoe Express (OMHA)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 6'2"
WT - 185
Erie has not drafted a defenceman in the first round in five years. They have gotten good mileage out of second and third round picks in the past, however having arguably one of the top defenceman available in this years draft fall to them at 13 will be too much for them to pass up. Varga is an intelligent defenceman who should make a rather seamless transition to the OHL. He will not wow fans with his speed or puck handling ability, but will be able to provide 15-20 safe minutes, and play a strong defensive game. Projects out to be a Dalton Prout type of player, with a little more offensive upside.
13. Windsor Spitfires - David Perklin
Team - Toronto Marlboros (GTHL)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'2"
WT - 185
Perklin has been on fire since December. The Marlboros forward started off slowly, however his second half of the season has displayed his high level of potential. He has above average puck skills for a 6'2 forward, and displays a willingness to mix it up physically. He will be able to come in and play a bottom six role and earn his way onto the top lines. His combination of size and skill will be hard to ignore. With the strong 1994 aged group that the Spitfires posses, this could be another team that takes a risk with a wild card player.
14. Saginaw Spirit - Anthony DeAngelo
Team - Ceder Rapid Roughriders (USHL)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 5'11"
WT - 160
DeAngelo is another wild card in the Draft. He has the talent and ability to be drafted in the top five, but given his college commitment (Boston University) and USHL spot (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) he has the ability to choose what team he will report to, assuming that he does go to the OHL as rumored. He is a skilled offensive defenceman who has the ability to control the game from the back end. He is a late birthday, which is a primary reason why he is expected to come to the OHL, as he has 3 more years until he is eligible for the NHL draft, and three years in the USHL could hurt his overall development.
15. Kitchener Rangers - Adam Bateman
Team - Don Mills Flyers (GTHL)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 5'10"
WT - 165
After a slow start, Bateman has really come on in the second half of the season, capping his season off with the OHL Cup, where he lead all defenceman in scoring. When healthy and playing his game, he is a smooth skating defenceman who projects out as a power play quarterback at the OHL level. The Rangers will be looking to restock its forwards as well, however Bateman makes the most sense given Ryan Murphy's uncertain future (could be in the NHL as yearly as next year,) as well as their lack of a true puck moving defenceman after Murphy.
16. Oshawa Generals - Michael Vlajkov
Team - St. Catharines Falcons (OMHA)
Position - Defence
HT - 6'2"
WT - 185
With the loss of Tony DeHart and expected departure of Calvin DeHaan, defence could be an area to examine for the Generals. Michael Vlajakov is a defenceman who plays a strong tow way game. He has the ability to play a shut down role, playing an aggressive brand of hockey in his own end, or he could play an offensive role on the power play, as he has one of the best point shots in the draft.
17. Mississauga St. Michaels Majors - Mitchell Dempsey
Team - Cambridge Hawks (MHAO)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'3"
WT - 205
The 17th overall selection will be awarded to the Mississauga St. Michael Majors due to the inability to sign Nick Ebert, who was traded to Windsor before training camp in September of 2010. Dempsey is a ‘north to south’ winger from Cambridge who displays a high ceiling. He has good mobility and footwork for a forward of his size, and brings high potential, given his mix of size and puck skills. He could move up Mississauga's depth chart quickly depending on what veterans return.
18. Ottawa 67's - Daniel Nikandrov
Team - Markham Majors (GTHL)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'1"
WT - 170
With the development of Sean Monahan, as well as Ryan Shipley and Taylor Fielding, the 67's have the opportunity to take whomever they deem as the best player available. Nikandrov is a prototypical 67’s forward. He can play all three forward positions, and is strong at both ends of the ice. He brings a good mix of size, skill and intelligence to the ice, and should fit into Ottawa's bottom six.
19. Niagara IceDogs - Nicholas Halagian
Team - St. Catharines Falcons (OMHA)
Position - Forward
HT - 5'11"
WT - 180
Halagian is a hard working forward who should find a home in Niagara. He always brings a high level of competitiveness, and when he is on, is one of the better forwards in the province. His biggest asset is his outside speed and his ability to drive to the net off of the wing. He makes smart plays with the puck in the offensive zone, and shows good puck protection behind the net. Will be a solid OHL forward who will bring offensive upside.
20. Owen Sound Attack - Nick Moutry
Team - York Simcoe Express (OMHA)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'1"
WT - 185
With the expected loss of Joey Hishon and Garrett Wilson, the expectation is that the Attack will look to the forward position with their 19th overall selection. Moutry is not a flashy skilled forward, however he has all the tools that you look for in a physical north to south winger in the OHL. He is smart with the puck and is strong in the cycle in the offensive zone. He moves well for a forward of his size. He will not be a huge scoring factor in his rookie year, but will be able to play some hard depth minutes to start the season.
21. Mississauga St. Michaels Majors - Spencer Martin
Team - Toronto Jr. Canadiens (GTHL)
Position - Goaltender
HT - 6'1"
WT - 180
With J.P. Anderson entering into what is expected to be his final season in the OHL, it may make sense for the Majors to look at Spencer Martin, who is hands down the top goaltender available in the Draft. Normally a 1st round goaltender is not something that we would endorse, however given that this will be the Majors second player selected, some of the pressure will be taken off of his shoulders. He is extremely focused and good positionally, and all season long displayed an ability to steal games for the Jr. Canadians. There have been rumors throughout the year that a team may look to take Martin higher then the 21st spot.
22. Barrie Colts - Chris Bigras
Team - Barrie Colts (OMHA)
Position - Defence
HT - 6'0"
WT - 185
Although the temptation may be for the Colts to look at the forward position after the selection of Aaron Ekblad at first overall, given the lack of depth at defence, the smart decision is to take the best player available, which in this case would be Brigas. He is an intelligent defenceman that will not impress you with offensive skills, but is strong positionally and takes care of things in his own end. He has the ability to chip in offensively once in a while, and is one of the more intelligent defenceman in the draft. Should be able to slot into the bottom paring with the Colts, and move up as the year progresses.
Wildcards:
Steve Santini
Team - New York AppleCore (EJHL)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 6'3"
WT - 205
Santini is one of the top defence prospects in the OHL Draft, and arguably one that would be a top five prospect had he not committed to the United States National Development Program (US NTDP). He is a strong defenceman that physically could have played in the OHL this year, and also has good offensive upside. He is also committed to the Boston College Eagles, so the odds that we see him selected in the first round are quite remote.
Will Butcher Team - Madison Capitals U18 (Tier 1)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 5'11"
WT - 180
Butcher is another defenceman who has an early commitment to the US NTDP. He is one of the top offensive defenceman in the draft, and has strong puck handling abilities. He could have been a top ten prospect, however based on his two-year commitment to the US program, there is not much of a chance that he is selected in the first round of the Draft.
Charlie Pelnik Team - Carolina Hurricanes U16 (CYHL)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 6'3"
WT - 178
Pelnik is a project defenceman, and one that could fit in well to the OHL game. He has a high ceiling and projects out as a big, physical defenceman who can contribute offensively. He has not committed to the US NTDP, but does have a verbal commitment to the University of North Dakota. Pelnik could be worth a risk if a team has a strong returning core.
J.T. Compher Team - Team Illinois U16 (Tier 1)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'0"
WT - 155
Compher is one of the better forwards available in the Draft. He has an early commitment to the US NTDP, as and also has a commitment to the University of Michigan. At this point it would be a shock to see him selected in the top 20.
Alex Smith Team - Detroit HoneyBaked U18 (Tier 1)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 6'0"
WT - 175
Smith is a very strong puck moving defenceman, one that could be worth a look. He is not committed to the US NTDP, although is a strong candidate, and has no verbal college commitment. If he makes it known that he is interested in the OHL, he could be a steal in the bottom half of the draft.
Ian McCoshen
Team - Waterloo Blackhawks (USHL)
Position - Defenceman
HT - 6'2"
WT - 195
McCoshen did not receive an invite to the US NTDP, mainly due to his involvement with the Waterloo Blackhawks program. He is a big physical defenceman who has the ability to play a two way game. He could be a solid mid-first round selection if he is interested in the OHL.
Gabe Guertler Team - Team Illinois U16 (Tier 1)
Position - Forward
HT - 5'10"
WT - 170
Guertler is the second best forward on this wildcard list. Although it is expected that he will attend the US NTDP next year, nothing is set in stone, as he has yet to receive an invite into the program. If a team can convince him to commit to the OHL, it would be a strong addition, and one that would pay off sooner then later.
Michael McCarron Team - Detroit HoneyBaked U18 (Tier 1)
Position - Forward
HT - 6'4"
WT - 205
McCarron is a big forward has a lot of projectable tools. He is another forward who could be headed to the US NTDP, however may be better suited for the OHL based on his high projectable upside. He is currently committed to Michigan State University.
With the Ontario Hockey League Draft three weeks away, TheScout.ca offers a look at some of the players who are expected to be taken in the first round with our 2011 OHL Mock Draft.

That 's were he was ranked early this season. He finished the season strong (22 points in 29 games) second highest scoring defenceman in his league. Had a fantastic playoff(8 points in 9 games), showed well at the OHL Cup, made the cut for the main U17 camp this summer and he has grown about 6" this season. I have a feeling he may not be there anymore in the 4th round.

Re: OHL Draft May 7th Gen's draft 16th
Just to start and corrections may be required, but to the best of my knowledge... obviously they have their 1st, London's 2nd from the Tavares trade; their own 2nd went to Plymouth for Carnevale I believe and at one point they had Kitchener's, Barrie's and London's 3rds and Plymouth's 4th as part of Carneval trade in return for the Gen's 5th to Plymouth and their 6th went to London as part of the DeHart deal. These may be off the mark so looking for cleanup and corrections. Please feel free.

Thanks for the update, Gens Camper.. so that info you provided sort of evens out the seconds? Just checked..Quinn was London's 2nd in 2011 so that's gone and the Gens did pick up a conditional 2nd in the Czarnik trade which was Windsor's originally.

I asked Shawn Cayley (This Week Newspaper) on twitter what the Gens had as draft picks, and here is his reply...
Osh has own in rounds 1, 3 and 7 through 14. They have Windsor second, London third and Barrie fourth. Nothing in the fifth or 15th.

Forgot that the Gens traded a 3rd and a 4th in2011 for Maggio. That explains the Barrie 3rd being gone and possibly the Plymouth 4th (See my previous post!). The picture gets clearer, I think/
