Genny that's great info thanks we need more shows at the empty GMC.

We really need a lounge here where Gens fans and Durham residents can chat about community news etc. Especially good to have in the off season as well as all year round.

GoGennies UGENS is it doable thanks?

QuickDraw there is a chat room at the top of the page where you can go to chat in the off season you could use that to talk to other people if they wish too, but I believe they would need to be registered to be able to chat though. Also the page you posted on is for all discussions.

Thanks UGENS you mean General Hockey Discussions is a lounge now too?

If so should it be renamed something like General Hockey Discussions & Lounge?

Attaching a lounge for non-hockey stuff can be done if wanted but it wouldn't accomplish anything in terms of attracting more interest in events in Oshawa because the only people who visit here are Gens fans. The problem is the GMC has very little to zero advertising outside of the hockey crowd. There are lots of people in Oshawa I'm sure who would love to see Kiss but aren't hockey fans. How do you reach these people? Oshawa's close enough to Toronto that it's the big city media that dominates - many in Oshawa never see the local papers or local television news. They only get local events if they happen to listen to CKDO.

What Oshawa needs is some way of getting the general population to know about these events. For example, I found out the day of from a co-worker that Jesse Cook was performing at the Regent. I love Jesse Cook and definitely would've taken my wife out to see that but it was too late to plan. How does one find out about such things in Oshawa?

I think the real problem here is the suburbanization of Oshawa, particularly at the north end around Taunton. It's tough to establish any community with that sort of development. What needs to happen is integration of the suburbanites into the main community of Oshawa and making the downtown an attractive place to go, that will help tremendously. Electronic signs easily visible to traffic with upcoming big events would cost some money but maybe that's one way to go about it. If the arena and city were to team up to purchase something like that and put one by the Oshawa Centre mall (actually in the mall might be good too) and another at the corner of Taunton and Simcoe, I think that would be tremendous. Maybe if the GMC opened up a ticket agent at the mall, that would work well too because the mall always gets traffic from both the historic Oshawa and the suburban Oshawa. Perhaps the new plaza at Stevenson and the 401 would be a good place too.

In the sixties and seventies I grew up in the Taunton and Simcoe area. I now live at Taunton and Grandview. It's not a real problem. Lack of advertising? Our local FM radio station 94.9 has been talking about it for a while now. The one local media that is really missed is the now defunct Oshawa Times. Oshawa This week doesn't have a clue. They can't get Fiesta Week straight. I think it is operated from Toronto.
I am glad the thread is well accepted.
Too bad you missed Jesse Cook beats. The Regent is really under advertised. If I was the new owner I would be freakin. I guess it is taken for granted that everyone checks websites for advertising.

Yes the GMC cost us over 1 Billion dollars and sits empty lets get some entertainment rolling in here and help out the Oshawa economy too.

KISS is playing 2 shows @ Casino Rama in July BTW.

Rumours are that UGENS, a big Paul Stanley fan back in the day, has already got her tickets. Very Happy

Sorry, Steamed, don't mean to step on your toes but I believe you're referring to Lawrence Gowan. He was more commonly known as just "Gowan" and had a few pretty big hits in the 80's with "strange animal," "a criminal mind" and "all the lovers in the world" and so on. my wife and I saw Styx/Gowan play at rama in oct 2004..........very good show. it would be well worth it to see him live again.

Point taken but you are exaggerating with $1 billion, right? What was the cost, maybe $50-$60 million? Even the new stadium for the New York Mets didn't cost more than $1 billion (although the new Yankee Stadium sure did!)

Are you serious? Shocked

Beats if you do your homework you will find out that the General Motors Centre in downtown Oshawa cost the city and durham region taxpayers over 1 BILLION DOLLARS. Yes Mr.Beats the GMC actually cost more to build than the new Yankee's stadium in New York but a little bit less than the Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

Don't Psycho Analyst’s make more money than school teachers and part time hockey arena DJ's? Very Happy Rolling Eyes

Can you find me a source of that information? The ACC was just under $300 million for 18,000 seats. I find it hard to believe that the GMC was more than triple the cost of an NHL arena.

If I'm wrong so be it but that number seems quite far off. I could see cost overruns and such equalling $100 million ... but that extra 0 is rather significant and I doubt we'd be dealing in billions for a junior hockey rink of any sort, no matter how nice it is.

Sorry QuickDraw but I don't have a clue what happened to them shoes. They had about a four inch platform on them. I used to attach roller skates to them and go roller skating at the now non existent North Oshawa Arena. I must have been seven feet tall with all that parafanalia stuck to my feet. Very Happy

I figured that was a likely possibility. However, there have been other things said on this board that I have thought were equally ridiculous and were intended in full seriousness.
