2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
I know we are all focussed on next Fridays start of the playoffs but the Priority Selection is only 2 weeks away....
Do the Gens go after a D or another F with their first pick?
Graduation will leave a ton of holes for next season..
Thoughts?

I was also thinking a D..
Returning D:
Brown
Carlisle
Petschenig
Karlsson will be a Euro OA and wont be back
Sullentrop will likely move on to play pro...would love to have him back as an OA though.

Looking at the forwards....we all know Boone, Lessio and Biggs are definitely gone but I also think Scott Laughton will stick with Flyers next year...that leaves:
LW: DC, Latour, Lloyd, McGuire (OA), Manchurak, Buehler
C: Cassels, Hughes (OA), Wallace, McDade
RW: Dundas, Morbeck (OA), M Hore

I believe you pick the best available player regardless of position, and then use the other rounds to pick positions.
Our returning Defense will be: Brown, Petschenig, Carlisle, Hamilton, Karlsson and i believe sullentrop will return. Yes Karlsson is a euro, but at this point we have no other euros reporting. MDC will be moved back to his original position which is centre. Our 3rd o/a will be Hughes.

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
I think you are dead on gmc 118. I also strongly believe Lessio will be returned for some "maturing". Trade him for a bundle at trade deadline next January. We need our 1st round and all the next three to make the team. A lot of mediocrity returning and this will be a definite re-building year. I'd let our last year players like Morbeck and Lloyd go but keep Dundas for muscle. Go with 4 or 5 youngsters on your 3rd and 4th lines and go for broke...take you lumps and bumps next year. Go ahead, cut me to shreds!

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
There is a topic on The Noof entitled 'Draft 1013', well down the page. It has two mock drafts where they list players possibly available at the 14 spot where the Gens select. They are Ethan Szypula (London Gold), defenceman,Kyle Capobianco (Oakville Rangers) and centre, Michell Stephens (Toronto Marlies) on one list and Cameron Lizotte a tough "D" from Copper Cliff (Captain material!), Garrett McFadden, a small "D" a la Murphy in Kitchener and Jordan Greenaway (Shattuck/St.Marys) who might go USNTDP. Names to remember in three weeks!

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
i can see lessio possibly coming back, only because he missed half the season. maybe Biggs cause he not close to NHL ready, but could see him on the marlies. Scott will ge the 10 games with the flyers and maybe come back. just my guesses

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
People, People. Lessio, Biggs and Sully are AHL bound. They are not coming back. Laughton is either NHL or OHL. And after what happened this year, it looks more like NHL. These are all NHL signed draftees, it might be different if they weren't. All these guys will have nothing left to prove in the O next year. But i do wish we had gotten Biggs when we actually drafted him!

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
I agree that we wont see LL or Sully back next year...I think we are 50/50 with getting Scott Laughton...If Scott is back, we will be very strong down the middle..many folks feel MDC will be moved back in the middle for his draft year...that leaves (as centres):
Laughton
MDC
Cassels
Wallace
Manchurek
If Hughes gets an OA spot, I think he'll be moved to the right wing

Are you guys kidding me , Sullentrop , is NOT AHL ready, he will be back as an overage , check his stats , his plus minus is not good considering we are a winning team , he's not ready , which will be good for us

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
Laughton just might make the flyers , he's really playing well , both ends of the ice , wouldn't hurt him to come back one more year , and be the captain . He'll get a long look with the flyers for sure

Lessio would also benefit from another year with the gens , but the way he skates he could make the pro's , another possible late returner

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
Sully is ready. Stats aren't everything, this guy is a workhorse. He didn't have the best game 1, but I think he's our best d-man. Our drafted 93s outside of Karlsson are ready for the next step. Biggs is the only one who I think would benefit, I guess it will depend on the Marlies depth and how well he adjusts to the AHL. Maybe in the middle of the year if he's not doing so well or if the Leafs make some forward propects trade. Time will tell, I just don't see any of them back, imo.

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
I personally think you can make arguments for all of them staying and all of them going. First Laughton, Philadelphia is pretty deep up front, but he made the team out of camp this year before being sent back. I think if Phily adds up front during the off season he's definitely back. If they use their forward depth to make a trade to upgrade their defense I think Laughton sticks. Laughton staying in the OHL would be most benifical though. He'd play in every situation as he does now, Captain the Gens ( more then likely) play on team Canada in the role Jenner has played the last two seasons as well as improve his offence.
Lessio, Phoenix isn't very strong up from at the AHL level and you have to remember at the start of this season everyone was saying he could of possibly stuck in Phoenix had the NHL season started on time. He's bound for the AHL.
Sullentrop, well Philadelphia is really weak on the backed as I stated previously at the AHL an NHL levels so it wouldn't shock me to see him stick. At the same time they may feel he'd be a 6th, 7th d at the AHL level so why not give him another year in the O. I personally think he's back. Biggs, well I think he left college thinking he would fast track himself to the NHL. In my opinion he would be a 4th liner with the Marlies and not benifit from playing there.
I think he benifit the most by playing on the gens top line next season. He's a power forward, an most young power forwards need a little more time to grow as players. I see the leafs sending him back. Karlsson will likely be traded or released its not often you see a import also occupy an OA spot unless they're goalies. The OA and import spots could be used far more efficiently.
So look for Laughton to Center Biggs and someone else an have Cassels Center Dal Colle an someone else. Hughes will probably bump up to numer 3 as an OA with Wallace or Manchurek centring the 4th. Dundace an Latour will see added ice time. I wouldn't be surprised to see Teddy Blueger th Gens Import pick last year come over an play on one of the top lines. I also think the gens will draft a forward at the priority draft and a Defensemen at the import draft or the other way around. The back end with Sullentrop, brown, peteschig, Carlisle will be pretty good, probably add a high draft pick an pat Hamilton, although acquiring a veteran d man would be smart.

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
I forgot to add, Owen McDade is having a pretty good rookie season in the CCHL with the Pembroke Lumber Kings he has 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points in 53 games. Which was good enough for top 10 on his club. Kelly Summers also of the CCHL but with the Carleton Place Canadiens is having a great season posting 13 goals and 20 assists for 33 points in 59 games as a defencemen. Keep in mind very few true rookie defencemen excel even in provincial Jr. A.
My point being these two guys could be useful depth guys, Summers as a 5 or 6 D-man, and with those offensive stats likely on a power play unit. An McDade as a 3rd or 4th line winger.
Manchurek had 28 points in 40 games for Leamington Jr. B. He would be my favorite for the 4th line center position as he has some OHL games under his belt. Also a candidate for a trade in the off season.

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
My understanding is that Summers has committed to an American college hockey program, can't remember which one. I don't think we will be seeing him in the 'schwa.

Re: 2013 Draft and 2013-14 Outlook
Just checked...Kelly has committed to Clarkson and Brent Norris who was drafted along with Brian Hughes will be attending the University of Connecticut. There are 5 or 6 players from the Carleton Place Canadians going south like him.
