Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
Good move for the gens. I personally would like one more offensive forward. Our d and goaltending have been solid . Is there a way to get gemel smith from Owen sound?

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
I wonder if Laughton & Smoskowittz are going to kiss and make up , it was Scott's only fight this season when we lost to Mississauga 4-0.
I personally like the trade only give up a 2nd 2016.and not a young player.
(now we don't have a 2nd in 14', 15' 16') also would like another forward and a OA Dman.
I think Twohey is not done yet (we have a 2nd in 2017)

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
Good Move by the Gens, definitely gives them some real solid depth down the middle. Laughton-Sterk-Smoskowitz-Harding/Hughes. My concerns & questions would be. 1, with adding another center what does this mean for Brian Hughes & Sam Harding, does Harding move to wing or is Hughes on his way out.
Secondly, people will most definitely complain about the 2nd round pick in 2016, now I can't completely defend the move. But look at it this way in the years from now to when that pick comes up the Generals could go through a rebuild and sell off players and recoup that and other lost 2nd round picks.
Smoskowitz, he's a 6'0 183lbs center who is in his overage season in the OHL. He was originally drafted in the 10th round in 2009 188th overall by the Barrie Colts. He spent the 2009-10 season in the OPJAHL with the Mississauga Chargers where he posted 27 goals 35 assists for 62 points in 56 games, as a 16 year old. He spent his 1st season in the OHL in 2010-2011 with the Barrie Colts, appearing in 67 games, scoring 21 goals and adding 10 assists for 31 points. In 2011-2012 he had a real down season appearing in 60 games but putting up just 9 points on 3 goals and 6 assists. But in his defense that Colts team was stacked and he played sparingly in a 4th line role. He bounced back in 2012-2013 when he was traded to Mississauga, as he put up 33 goals and 22 assists for 55 points in 61 games. Thus far in the 2013-2014 season Smoskowitz has 20 goals and 9 assists in 40 games.
Obviously from his point totals Smoskowitz is a pure goal scorer. He may not be the big name associated with a pure goal scorer, but that is indeed what he is, in an offensive sense. What I mean by that is offensively, he's not much of a playmaker, but can get open and finish. Defensively he's great. He's position-ally sound, he plays with tenacity, and he finishes his checks. Smoskowitz's presence will not only help the Generals 5on5 play and PK but their PP as well.
I thought Smoskowitz was probably more of a 3rd round pick + Matt Hore/Owen McDade or a 5th/6th round pick. But we wanted a trade an this was the price tag, an he will be a very serviceable player for the Generals.

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
*Side note, its been said that Ryan Van Stralen was headed to Oshawa for McDade and a 3rd. If this is the case, obviously Hughes is on his way out. If that deal eventually gets done, I think we are one defense man away from having a very very solid club and title contender.
High price for a rental O A
I guess the Ottawa deal fell through - We now have 3 O A some even though some think Hughes is expendable - I am not one of them - his play is mostly on the penalty kill and is a hard nosed 3 rd line checking forward that you need for a deep run
The only way Hughes is moved is with another O A - But I think he sticks - I agree that your O A should be a top forward BUT no sense in dumping Hughes for a rookie
- Now for the next 3 yrs we have no 2nd rd pick - RISKY - but that is what we all want
Another trade will happen - We added a player to the roster - so if we don't make a 2 for 1 trade then who gets cut

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
Smoskowitz was Twohey's 2nd choice as Michael Schumacher of Sweden was his 1st but the deal fell tough as he got called to Erie(ahl team) that would of given up 2 spots (euro & OA) I think SSM own his rights.
Now lets hope Twohey can get an euro and maybe another OA, can't have an OA (Hughes) playing on the 4th line, all 3 OA's should be able to play top minutes
and right now we only have 2, my opinion and nothing personal against Hughes.

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
Guys , if you really look at it 2nd round picks are not everything they are cracked up to be , how many 2nd round picks do we actually have on our team now , with good scouting , you can do just as well with 3rd round and 4 th round picks , the big picks are obviously 1st rounders , which winners are built on , but you have to be a bottom feeder for a few years , to make it work , fine with me ! …..good move , hope he's not done yet !

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
I thought it might have involved Brace but with him awaiting what could be a lengthy suspension those talks will have fallen through. Don't know either player that well but on the surface, both seem to have similar skill sets. Brace could still come at a cheap price once his suspension is over as he will only be available for 10-12 games (conjecture only!) Can't see Twohey moving Hughes as he is an established vet here and brings the skills described above to the table, but I agree your OAs should be capable of being on the top two lines.

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
Guys , on a top quality team competing for the championship , the Hughes type do not take up an overage spot , Hughes has had 4 years to improve , he has not , good kid i'm sure , played
a role , he will fit somewhere in the league perhaps ,
this isn't SHOWFRIENDS ……this is SHOWBUSINESS

I was a cheerleader for Brace , but in the end , we do not want him , for some reason he is out of control , or marked by the league , we already have DUNDAS

Agreed mygens! Smoskovitz might be the better character player. We could still use a Euro and a big rugged defenceman. Waiting patiently! NOT!

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
As far as Brian Hughes goes, here's my take. The guy has been a good depth player for the Generals while he's been with them, but that's what he is a depth player. A 3rd or 4th line center, who contributes some PK time. In the OHL if you want to contend all your OA's need to play significant roles. Hughes is probably a great kid, but I mean at this point in time he's our 4th line center. Who will play 5-7 minutes a game. Your not going to get anything for him in a trade but maybe throw him in, in a trade where an OA comes back. Van Stralen for McDade, Hughes & a 3rd or 4th.
Prior to this trade I had my OA targets for the Generals in this order, Nick Latta, Clark Seymour, Dylan Smoskowitz then Ryan Van Stralen. I think the Generals would greatly benefit from adding Seymour to the back end or Van Stralen to the wing. Either way I feel they need a top 6 winger and a top 4 D and then they are set.
As for draft picks, in my opinion 1-5 round picks are valuable. Think about it that's the top 100 picks, aka the top 100 prospects in Ontario and parts of the USA. But it all does come down to scouting. You could have 3 2nd rounder's an they could all go bust, but your 3rd,4th,5th,10th rounder's all become NHL caliber players. Here's one example. In the 2010 OHL draft Niagara had 2 1sts (6th and 8th) 2 2nds (25th & 39th) and 1 5th (100th). They picked Jesse Graham & Luke Mercer in the 1st round. Matt Finn went 12th, Sean Monahan went 16th, Chris Tierney went 19th & Kerby Rychel went 21st. In the 2nd round the Icedogs took Billy Jenks and Joel Wigel, while Adam Pelech went 22nd, Tom Wilson 27th, Scott Kosmachuk 29th, Jake Paterson 32nd. Before their 5th round pick, Josh Brown went 44th, Altshuller 45th, Brock McGinn 46th, Ryan Rupert 49th, Brady Vail 67th, Andreas Athanasiou 81st, Trevor Carrick 85th, Ryan Hartman 95th and Brett Welychka 99th. Their pick the 100th was Jeff Heard. Where as the Guelph Storm took Matt Finn, Scott Kosmachuk, Brock McGinn, Zac Leslie and Justin Auger with their 1st,2nd,3rd,4th and 6th round picks. An now look at the state of both these teams this season. I guess my point is draft picks are less valuable to teams if they draft well, and more valuable to teams that have trouble drafting.

I agree Jaycro , Van Stralen for McDade , would be a very good move !, Harding and Busch look like real players they will be prominent next year !

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
Not to be a pessimist, but I don't think the Petes are ready to cash in their chips quite yet; therefore no Seymour to us. There is a tweet re-posted on the Petes message board that Gemel Smith might be on the move and Oshawa is the leading contender. Doubt that as the 'Sound" is still in contention for a playoff spot. I still think our only potential trading partner is Ottawa.

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
exactly Macker88 , the first round pick is critical , happy teams are not allowed to trade them , with good scouting work , 2nd 3rd and 4 th rounds can be equally effective , in fact i don't think the gens 2nd round picks have been as good as some of their 3rd and 4th rounders …….the gens have suffered the last while with their 2nd round picks , hopefully this new management team will do better !

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
Okay, so Brace only gets 5 games. That makes him eligible to play about 25 or so for the Gennies. Probably no bargoon there now so he's probably off the table. As far as Carrick or Koekkoek go, the Gens can't afford them... no 2nds until 2017! We have to go for "second layer" players so no Gaunce/Rychel types in our future I'm afraid.

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
Brace would be a high risk and maybe upset chemistry
Koekkoeck should be the target - Who knows what the asking price would be
Wasn't Thwoey a Pete when he was drafted by the Petes
maybe a couple of players and some NCAA players we drafted who may play in Windsor plus some 3rd r 4 th rd picks
Another possibility is Mercer in Niagara

Not really interested in Mercer...too small! What Americans do the Gens have? DiPauli and Stepan from the Yank's World Junior team maybe but I think they are 19 now?

Re: WHERE ARE THE TRADES????
So the Petes picked up Hunter Garlent from the Storm today for Stephen Pierog and 4, count 'em 4 2nd rounders. Sure makes the Gens Smoskowitz deal look good although Garlent has 2 years left. Supposedly Guelph might flip Pierog and/or some of those 2nds to Windsor.
